Krystal, Monique and Vince - Rātā Tree

Today in TWP (Te Wairua Pakiki), we are learning about New Zealand native trees. This is important because, the trees are the tagata whenua which connects to Tāne Mahuta. In this activity we had to match ourselves up with another person. It was the year 5's together with the year 8's, then the year 6's and 7's together. We were put into 18 groups of three or two, it was Monique, Vince and I. We had to discuss what our group name was going to be. We decided to learn more about the rātā tree. We had to look up on google of what the Rātā leaves look like, the rātā flowers look like, the fruit/seeds look like and what the bark looks like. Here is our activity below!

In the first activity we had to figure the names of the plant. We had to find out the native trees here in New Zealand. We had to search up most of the plants to see if it was right. In the second activity we had to figure the names of the trees by looking at the type of bark on the tree. One photo of the trees were blurry. After we did that in our paper we had to do it all on our Chromebook. Here are our activities!

Krystal - Body Parts Mobile

This week we've had Life Education come in. In Life Education we learned stuff about our body parts and what happens. We learned some important facts about our heart, lungs, brain, small intestines, large intestines and our stomach. One thing that I learned about our stomach is that our stomach is on the left side of our upper abdomen. We had to make a mobile. A mobile is kind of like the toy that hangs up on top of a baby's cot. We had to write three or two facts that we know about each of our important body parts. Here is my mobile and my facts!

Krystal 17th May 2021 Term 2 RE
Matching column a with column b/ Jesus’ Ascension

  • Jesus entered Jerusalem on a donkey, 50 days before Ascension day.
  • On Thursday of the week that followed Palm Sunday, Jesus had his last meal with his apostles.
  • The day after his last supper Jesus was put to death on a cross on Calvary Hill.
  • Jesus lay in a tomb for 3 days and then God raised him up.
  • After his resurrection Jesus showed himself to his friends and some of them did not recognise him.
  • He spent time with his apostles and told them he was going to return to his Father.
  • 50 days after Palm Sunday Jesus was taken by God to share his glory in heaven.
  • Because Jesus entered heaven in glory he made it possible for his followers to do the same.

Krystal - Little Legends Try It Out

Yesterday on the 11th of May 2021. We had some visitors from Auckland Rugby League (ARL) come in and do some teasers. We did some passing and some other stuff. David and Ali are the two men that came in. We all had to be in 5 groups of 5. We and to pick up a ball and score it on the line with two hands on the ball, then run back and give the ball to the next person. This was like a relay race. Team three won this relay race. Ali said we had to be like a superhero. The superhero we had to be like was the Flash and Captain America. Then we played a game kind of like a mix in between Stuck in the Middle and Dodge ball. With this game there are taggers with the ball and they have to tag you with two hands on the ball. If they don't touch you with both of their hands on the ball then that doesn't count. In the first round their was one tagger then later on it becomes more harder with more taggers. Then last one standing is the winner. The taggers can come inside of the circle. Later on we had more relay races. After we were done David and Ali gave us all certificates. We talked about how we can be apart of rugby league clubs. Then we went back to our class.

Krystal - Tahuna Torea

Today in Te Wairua Pakiki (TWP), we went to Tahuna Torea with Glen Innes Primary (Year 7's & 8's). We both took buses to the place. When we arrived there , we met a lot of teachers and other people. We met Dr. Jannie and Dr Theirry. We were split into 6 groups with Glen Innes. There was Group A, Group B, Group C, Group D, Group E and Group F. I was in Group C with Glen Innes' Group C. We went with Ms. Nees-Kairua and Dr Thierry. We went to the sand dunes. Then after 20 minutes we went to the mangroves with Hevaha and Dr. Jannie. Lastly we went to the bush with Mrs. Tui. If you want to know what we did in these places, read below!

Krystal - Trees Talk To Each Other

Today I read an aticle about how "Trees Talk To Each Other" Suzanne Simard was interviewed and was asked how trees talk to each other. Suzanne says "Trees talk through to each other in many ways" Suzanne grew up in Canadian forests as a descendant of loggers before becoming a forestry ecologist. I also did a glossary. A glossary are words you don't know the meaning to. If you know what else I did read below!

Trees Talk To Each Other Friday 7th May

What is this article about?
Trees are “social creatures that communicate with each other in many ways. Suzanne Simard says. Suzanne grew up in many Canadian forests. Trees are linked to nearby trees, by an underground network of fungi. Suzanne watched as a Douglas fir that had been hurt by insects. The ponderosa pine tree produced enzymes to protect the pine tree from the insects. "This was a breakthrough," Suzanne says. The trees were sharing "information that actually is important to the health of the whole forest." Suzanne says the trees know when the to share nutrients at hard times to keep each other healthy. Trees in the forest are usually linked through each other by a “mother” or a “hub”. While Suzanne was studying about the trees later on she found out she had breast cancer.

Glossary:
Enzymes - Enzymes are substances that produce, by a living organism which acts as a catalyst.

Krystal - Amazing Plants

Today I watched a video of what plants are. I found out that light energy is used to transform into carbon dioxide, and water into chemical energy. After I watched the video I wrote down some words I didn't know like a glossary. Then I had to find out the meaning of it. There were four words I didn't know the meaning to. Here is my activity!

Light Energy - Light Energy is used to transform into carbon dioxide, and water into chemical energy.
Light Energy - Knowledge Bank - Solar Schools
Sugars - The sugars are used for the plants to grow, to fight insects pests or drought stress. Extra sugars can be put in the storage organs for later use of the plants.

Krystal - Mothers Day Mass

Today we had a very special mass for Mothers Day. Some of our mothers came to the mass to celebrate with us. In class today and the rest of the week, we made some Mothers Day cards for the special women in our lives. Mrs. Palu used the glider to cut the paper into strips. We folded the paper that we found in the cupboard. We had five different colours of the strips. I took white and dark red. We rolled/quilled the paper up by using the tip of a pencil. I quilled about eight or seven white and dark red paper. First we had to lightly draw the heart. Secondly I used PVA glue to sick it on the front of the paper. Next we took the strips of paper, then put the glue on the side of the paper for it to stick to the quilled paper, and on the bottom to make it stick. After we were done we wrote some things of what we appreciate about our mum/nan/aunty/cousin/sister. In my card I wrote I appreciate my mum, because she makes the best carrot cake. I don’t even like carrots but I love her cake. I know my mum loves me, because she only takes me to McDonald’s when I am down. I love my mum  for caring about me when I am down. She also makes funny faces. Here is my card!

Krystal - Te Reo Māori

Today Te Wairua Pakiki 4 (TWP4) did some Te Reo Māori. We jogged our memories of some words. We also learnt a song of the Māori alphabet. The Māori alphabet (arapū) is made up of eight consonants, five vowels and two digraghs. The two digraphs are ng and wh. Orokati is the meaning of consonants, and Oropūare is the meaning of the vowels (a,e,i,o,u). The macron on top of the letters is pronounced dragged. If you want to know more about the Māori alphabet here is my activity! Here is the song (waiata) that we learnt!
