Krystal - Tahuna Torea

Today in Te Wairua Pakiki (TWP), we went to Tahuna Torea with Glen Innes Primary (Year 7's & 8's). We both took buses to the place. When we arrived there , we met a lot of teachers and other people. We met Dr. Jannie and Dr Theirry. We were split into 6 groups with Glen Innes. There was Group A, Group B, Group C, Group D, Group E and Group F. I was in Group C with Glen Innes' Group C. We went with Ms. Nees-Kairua and Dr Thierry. We went to the sand dunes. Then after 20 minutes we went to the mangroves with Hevaha and Dr. Jannie. Lastly we went to the bush with Mrs. Tui. Krystal - Trees Talk To Each Other

Today I read an aticle about how "Trees Talk To Each Other" Suzanne Simard was interviewed and was asked how trees talk to each other. Suzanne says "Trees talk through to each other in many ways" Suzanne grew up in Canadian forests as a descendant of loggers before becoming a forestry ecologist. I also did a glossary. A glossary are words you don't know the meaning to. If you know what else I did read below!

What is this article about? 

Trees are “social creatures that communicate with each other in many ways. Suzanne Simard says. Suzanne grew up in many Canadian forests. Trees are linked to nearby trees, by an underground network of fungi. Suzanne watched as a Douglas fir that had been hurt by insects. The ponderosa pine tree produced enzymes to protect the pine tree from the insects. "This was a breakthrough," Suzanne says. The trees were sharing "information that actually is important to the health of the whole forest." Suzanne says the trees know when the to share nutrients at hard times to keep each other healthy. Trees in the forest are usually linked through each other by a “mother” or a “hub”. While Suzanne was studying about the trees later on she found out she had breast cancer. 

Glossary: 

Enzymes - Enzymes are substances that produce, by a living organism which acts as a catalyst. 

Ecology - Ecology is the meaning of the branch of biology that deals with the relations of organisms to one another and to their physical surround. 

Facilitate - Facilitate means is when you make a move or an action. 

 Fungi - A group of spore-producing organisms.

Krystal - Amazing Plants

Today I watched a video of what plants are. I found out that light energy is used to transform into carbon dioxide, and water into chemical energy. After I watched the video I wrote down some words I didn't know like a glossary. Then I had to find out the meaning of it. There were four words I didn't know the meaning to. Here is my activity!

What is a plant? 

Photosynthesis - Photosynthesis is the process of which the green plants and some other organisms use sunlight. Plants can turn and grow towards the light if the spot they are in is dark. 

Germanize - To germinate or grow. 

Meristems - Plants have a localized growth called meristems also known as the bud. These are territories of cell division and plant growth. The buds are the the stem of a plant. If you cut it in the right place it will grow many more leaves. 

Light Energy - Light Energy is used to transform into carbon dioxide, and water into chemical energy.

Sugars - The sugars are used for the plants to grow, to fight insects pests or drought stress. Extra sugars can be put in the storage organs for later use of the plants.

Krystal - Sauropods what are they and how big?

Recently my class, Te Wairua Pakiki 4 (TWP4) have been doing Science. Here is another activity on Science. We wrote about Sauropods. Sauropods are dinosaurs that have really long necks and have four legs. We made a scale to see compare the sauropod to an elephant and a seal. Then we also did a little bit about them and where they lived. Here is my activity!

Today I did an activity, on where Mangahouanga Stream is. Mangahouanga Stream is a stream where, Joan Wiffen found a dinosaur bone in this stream. If you want to know more Maungahouanga Stream, read below!

Krystal - Prehistoric Life

Today for Science, we did a history on the prehistoric life for dinosaurs. The three period of time are Cretaceous, Jurassic and Triassic. Cretaceous is a period from 65 million years ago to 144 million years ago. Jurassic is a period of time from 144 million years ago to 208 million years ago. Triassic is a period of time from 208 million years ago to 248 million years ago. We looked at a time line of when creatures were here before dinosaurs. Birds, small reptiles and mammals were alive 65 million years ago to 144 million years ago. Which was a VERY long time ago. Dinosaurs were here 144 million years ago to 208 million years ago. Triassic reptiles, amphibians and ammonites were here 208 million years ago and disappeared 248 million years ago. Here is my activity. 

Krystal - What is a Trilobite?

 Today in Science my class did a little bit about Trilobites. If you don't know what a Trilobite is here is one fact I know about them.
